Teaching with Picture Books

Teaching with picture books is a great idea for all ages.  For those looking for ideas for teaching with picture books, Stromple is ideal!    Educators and parents who are teaching with picture books such as this episode of Stromple’s life make learning fun for the children that they care about!

For the teachers out there, whether you’re licensed or not (parents are teachers, too!), and whether you’re working with elementary students, middle-schoolers, or even secondary students, Stromple Popanopolis and the Super-Huge Temper Tantrum provides a prime example of the use of assonance and alliteration within a piece of literature:

Assonance: Repetition of vowel sounds within a piece of writing
Alliteration: Repetition of consonant sounds within a piece of writing

Example:
“The branches wiggled and the leaves jiggled and the baby bluebirds in their nest didn’t giggle because they almost fell out!

And, as with any story, this episode of Stromple’s life can be mapped out, helping students understand Character, Setting, Plot, Climax, Conclusion, Sequence, Main Idea, Details, etc.  They can also learn about cause and effect – for example, how did Stromple’s choices affect his mama, the birds, the ants, and himself?  Going deeper (perhaps with your middle school students) one can think more universally, and consider the effects that Stromple’s actions had on those who simply know those he affected.  For example, how might this experience affect Stromple’s daddy or Stromple’s siblings?  Might Stromple’s mama change the way she handles similar situations with others after raising him?

Teaching with picture books should not seem intimidating. Teaching with picture books should be done by everyone who has children whose education and entertainment is important to them.  Teaching with picture books is important at a young age, fun at any age, and even essential for some middle-schoolers.  Start today!
