Teaching Toddlers Through Books

Because they copy many of the things we do, teaching toddlers through books is a great idea!  Although they may not sit still through a traditional book, we can give them a board book, and let them be the boss, making teaching toddlers through books easier.

The book, Stromple and the Super-Huge Temper Tantrum can teach toddlers early literacy and social skills. It is a perfect example of teaching toddlers through books.  Here are some lessons Stromple and/or the reader learns in the story:

Compassion – The reader sees how Mama, the baby birds and the ants are affected by Stromple’s temper tantrum and can learn to empathize with them.

Understanding & Self-Control – Stromple knows he shouldn’t throw a tantrum, but after he does, he realizes that he was wrong and that he has upset his mama.  One hopes that, after learning his lesson, he doesn’t get out of control again!

Respect, and Sympathy – Stromple respects his mama and sympathizes with her

Communication – When Stromple comes home, both he and his mama show good communication skills

Courage – it took courage for Stromple to realize he was wrong and admit so.

Sincerity - Stromple’s apology was very sincere.  Deep down, he’s a good, sincere little soul!

We can reinforce many of the values we teach our children by teaching toddlers through books.  This book teaches both values and language arts to kids from pre-k to secondary.  Reading to and teaching toddlers through books early on in life will foster a life-long love of reading for the kids you love.
